Greatness - a history (what does it mean to leave a legacy?)

legacy (from Oxford Languages) - the long lasting impacts of particular events, actions, etc. that took place in the past or of a person's life. (2nd definition)

Whether subtle or obvious, legacy is power - the power to change the course of history. With strong foundations, a legacy may last for millennia, for better or worse. They're built from the actions in your life, how you treat others, the decisions you make - the way you've lived your life, everything taken into account. If you leave this world fulfilled, having lived vicariously and graciously, and left positive marks in history, you would hope that your legacy would withstand the future and your memory would live on. If you've lived a noble life, your legacy will be strong.

A notable example of a legacy that would come to mind may be the Roman Empire - lasting around two thousand years, this was one of the longest known empires in recent history. Although not everything they brought to the table is appreciated in modern day (e.g. stinging nettles - used for warmth in the past), the Romans gave us a solid foundation to begin building our system for law and order, in addition to architecture, construction and the beginnings for modern language (Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese are all at least partially derived from Latin, one of the most commonly spoken languages in Ancient Rome). In fact, the word 'legacy' itself is rooted from a Latin verb - 'legare' - meaning 'to appoint by a last will.' In this case, the legacy of the Roman Empire would be their inventions and names in history, but other examples may be economic or moral.

Leaving behind something notable may be a driver in someone's life - to be remembered for your actions, discoveries, or to give financial security. This may be achieved by practicing kindness and understanding, going into a research-based field as a career, or starting a successful company to provide their children with an inheritance to sustain them, whilst they find their footing as an adult. The collective aim of people trying to leave a positive legacy is to leave the world having improved it for future generations, giving them a better chance at success. However, contrary to its implications, a legacy is not always a positive thing. Riches may be achieved through theft, memory can be infamy, power can mean stopping at nothing to be the best, including harming those in your way, and some inventions and discoveries may not always be for the better. This is not to say a legacy cannot be achieved entirely through good will - but many may feel their only way to be remembered is by following illicit paths and covering their tracks.

To leave a legacy is to do something worth remembering - whether that be through one grand notable thing or small things in your day-to-day life. Your legacy is created through your actions - what you do is what you leave behind.

A.N. - back for another post. Thank you so much for reading, it really does mean a lot. Hopefully will be back soon with something else to think about. :)
